Mount Bross is the 24th highest peak in Colorado and is a "fourteener."  It resides in the Mosquito Range in the central part of the state approximately 15 miles south of Breckenridge, Colorado.  We are always looking for high mountains to climb in winter, and Mount Bross offers a relatively safe winter experience.  Join Jackie and Alan along with eleven SummitPost.org friends for a spectacular day on Mount Bross.

We started our winter adventure at the Kite Lake trailhead at 6:00 AM.  The first part of the journey involved a three mile snowshoe to the base of the mountain

Jackie stops just below the base of Mount Bross.  At this point the weather is pretty good with high clouds, light winds, and the temperature at around 20 degrees.  Photo by Barry Raven.

Just above Kite Lake, you can now see all the climbers headed to Mount Bross (in the background).  Notice the large canyon/gully to the right of the summit.  That was our immediate goal.

Jackie and Raman climb the slopes just below the entrance to the gully.

This photo is taken in the gully from the opposite direction looking toward Kite Lake.  The climbers are strung out inside the gully as the weather begins to worsen.  Photo by Barry Raven.

Near the top of the gully at 13,500 ft., the summit ridge comes into view through the worsening weather.  Climbers (Alan in yellow) struggle against the wind, temperature, and altitude.  Photo by Barry Raven.

Almost to the top (Alan in center).  By this time, the wind is 40-50 mph with near zero visability and a temperature of ten degrees.  Alan's camera froze at this point, thus getting no summit photos.  Photo by Kane Engelbert.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this gathering of SummitPost.org members.  As usual, we had a great time meeting everyone.  Mount Bross in winter offered just the challenge we were looking for and is a good winter fourteener experience.  Thanks to Mount Bross for a safe day!  Photo by Barry Raven.
