Torrey's Peak, Kelso Ridge, Colorado

Torrey's via Kelso Ridge
14,267 Feet
Torrey's Peak is one of the most popular 14ers in Colorado. The standard route via the South Slopes
route is relatively easy and is basically a hike up a very nice trail. On a typical summer weekend, there will be hundreds of people on the
trail to Torrey's Peak. Instead of the standard (and crowded) route, we opted to used the Kelso Ridge, a class 3 route that ascends Torrey's via the jagged northeast ridge.
This is a fun and exhilarating route, and perfect introduction to class three Colorado mountaineering.

Shortly befor sunrise, Mary looks back at the valley before heading up the ridge.
At the beginning, the ridge looks imposing. Alan is contemplating the first of three cruxes on the route.
Mary looks back at the beginning of the ridge. This would be her first class 3 route.
Things are getting serious on the ridge as Mary has to use her hands for balance.

Great views of the valley as we get higher on the mountain.
Mary on the knife edge near the summit. This is the final and most difficult crux of the route.
Time for Alan's obligitory selfie. Highly recommend a helmet for this route.
Mary, Alan, and Kurt on the summit! A great day in the mountains.

If you're up for it, the Kelso Ridge is a wonderful alternative to the crowds of the standard route. We had a great day on Torrey's Peak. Thanks to Mary for the
use of her photos and to Kurt for tagging along and helping with the route finding.
